Following Will's lead I decided to post some more hidden/forgotten/under-rated gems in Austalian music.
First focusing on Sydney band The Sunnyboys. They remain one of the most highly regarded and best-loved bands of the Australian 'post-punk' era. Fronted by the enigmatic and youthful singer/songwriter guitarist Jeremy Oxley, the band breathed some freshness and vitality into the Sydney music scene in the early 80s.
Things happened very quickly for The Sunnyboys, who went from playing inner-city venues to scoring hit singles for the prestigious Mushroom label all within a year of formation. What set the band apart in many ways was Oxley's song writing ability. The chemistry between the four members was perfect too.
Moving onto The Dugites, with their great synth-pop single Cut The Talking.
A friend of my mum's from the Dandenong Ranges, musician Cres Crisp played keyboards in this short lived wonder, The Orphans. They released 3 singles in 1982. This was their biggest hit, reaching No.47 on the Australian charts on the back of their success in Melbourne where it got to No.23. Cres is still an active musician who has produced other artists such as Tasmanian folk songwriter Ian Paulin.
